Ishikawa Prefectural Noh Theater 石川県立能楽堂
Watch the living tradition of Noh theater in Ishikawa
The Ishikawa Prefectural Noh Theater holds various Noh performances roughly weekly, plus more casual Noh events on Saturdays in the summer and winter. Visit outside showtime to tour the stage, which dates from 1932.
Noh theater dates to the fourteenth century and was historically reserved for nobility. However, Kanazawa was one of the only places in Japan where ordinary people learned Noh during the Edo Period (1603–1867). This popularity encouraged the development of Ishikawa’s own style of Noh, called Kaga-Hosho.
