Okuma Kabuto Festival お熊甲祭

Spirited procession with drums, chants, and 20-meter-tall flags

The Okuma Kabuto Festival is the grand festival of the Kumakabuto Arakashihiko-jinja Shrine in Nanao. It is also known as the “20th Day Festival” as it takes place every year on September 20.

Nineteen local shrines take part in the festival, each represented by a 20-meter-tall crimson flag. Participants wave these flags to the rhythm of taiko drums, bells, and chants in a large parade. The procession is led by an actor portraying Sarutahiko, a Shinto deity with a red face and long nose.
