Noto Jofu Museum 能登上布会館
Local hemp fabric with 2,000 years of history
The Noto Jofu Museum introduces visitors to Noto jofu, a lightweight, handmade hemp cloth, and its production. Visitors can see every step of the involved manufacturing process, including dyeing and matching threads for complex designs.
According to legend, the technique for producing the cloth was brought to the town by a princess almost 2,000 years ago. Around the 1920s, the Noto Peninsula led Japan in the production of hemp fabric.
