Magaki no Sato 間垣の里

Towering bamboo fences protect homes from sea winds

Magaki no Sato are areas where bamboo fences called magaki are erected to protect homes from strong, salty sea winds in winter. There are villages with these fences in the Wajima area.

Magaki, which are about five meters high, serve a second purpose of blocking the western sun in summer. The fences are repaired each November.

One such village in Wajima, about 30 minutes from the city center along Route 38, gained popularity when the TV series “Mare” was filmed there in 2015.
