During the Edo period (1603–1867), Ishikawa was part of the wealthiest domain in Japan and its rulers enjoyed massive power and influence from their home in Kanazawa. They invested heavily in the arts and turned Kanazawa into a cultural hub. Crafts, cuisine, and entertainment flourished, and their impact is still felt in Ishikawa today.

Gold leaf is particularly representative of the prefecture, with 99% of Japan’s gold leaf being produced in Kanazawa.
